Stansted Airport and Ash Cloud

In the year 2010 the volcanic eruption in Iceland shutdown Europe’s air travels. This stranded many throughout the world. Europeans could not come home and visitors could not leave. This impacted the world and the economic toll that is still being felt. Indeed, this natural event showed just how fragile some of the most taken for granted systems truly can be.

Airports everywhere were impacted including London’s Stansted Airport. The airport is home to the massive low-cost carrier Ryanair. Ryanair uses Stansted as one of its bases and has over one hundred routes out of the airport. So, when the airport closed during the disruption this carrier had thousands of passengers left at its many destinations, as well as London. To its credit it did do much when flights resumed to take people home, it even added flights to make it happen as quickly as possible.

Of course, Stansted Airport and ash cloud issues impacted more than just Ryanair. EasyJet also has a significant presence there along with many other airlines. Stansted has over a nineteen million passengers pass through every year. That makes it the third busiest airport of the London international airports. That just shows the scale of what the drifting ash cloud had on the airport when flights were grounded.

Sadly, things were touch and go, with another dense ash cloud in May impacting travel. For even if Stansted was cleared for travel, then another airport closure could leave people stranded in London or elsewhere. This was the case with Ryanair during the May ash cloud, Ryanair had to cancel twenty-five flights because of airport closings elsewhere.

Stansted Airport Weather Forecast

The weather at Stansted Airport usually leaves much to be desired. The weather in the UK is very changeable – it can be sunny one minute and thunderstorms the next. For those that haven’t visited the UK before, it is one of the hardest things to get used to! At the time of writing, we’re currently in mid July – a month that is supposed to be full sun all day every day – and in fact we are finding ourselves with some of the hardest rainfalls recorded for years! With London being in the South of the country, there is a slightly higher chance of it being nicer than other parts of the country.

Whilst you may not think that the weather is important for your airport (as you’ll most likely be worrying about what the weather is life at your ultimate destination) but there is a history of flights being cancelled for weather reasons in the UK. One very extreme weather condition to check for at the moment is the cloud of ash that has been constantly appearing from the volcano in Iceland and affecting air travel all over the world. The UK is relatively close to Iceland so it would be wise to check this before going to the airport. You should also ensure you have adequate travel insurance to cover this in case your flights are delayed or cancelled because of the ash. Flights have also been cancelled in recent years from Stansted due to very heavy rain – it does happen! However, in the winter months too much snow can be absolutely critical for planes and many flights are cancelled.

Stansted Airport Address

Stansted airport is one of the most famous and most popular airports in Britain. When you are trying to go on holiday somewhere then it is usually Stansted that you think to fly from – with one of the widest arrays of airport destinations on offer and at a very low price, it is no surprise that so many people decide to fly from there. The only issue with Stansted airport is that it is not within the centre of the city of London, but a few miles north. This means that travelling by train is, quite simply, out of the question – it is very pricy (having to travel in and out of the city is never a good idea) and is also very fiddly – particularly if you are travelling from anywhere other than London involving numerous changes of train. It just isn’t worth the hassle. Because of this, the best idea is to drive to Stansted airport. That way, you will arrive at the airport without any fuss and, more importantly, directly.

This means that you will need to know the address so that you can plug it into the satellite navigation system or look it up in the map. The address is; Stansted airport, Terminal Road North, Takeley, Essex, CM24 1RW. Just pop this into your machines and a route will come up with the shortest journey between your home and Stansted airport. There is no hassle and no fuss and there is no chance that you will miss your flight. What could be easier?

Weather at Stansted Airport

The weather this year has been overly bizarre. In the winter we had more snow than we have ever had in recent years and it lasted for much longer than expected. Then we had all the disruption that was caused by the Icelandic ash cloud which grounded many flights. So much money has been wasted on flights that haven’t taken off because of the weather and the problem is that it’s too late when you get to the airport only to find that your flight is cancelled. If people had kept up to date with the weather conditions during these two periods, they would not have booked flights at that time and would have saved themselves a lot of money (of course, this isn’t the case for those who booked their holidays well in advance of the events, but with so many people deciding to go on spur of the moment holidays it is strange that they didn’t take the weather, and the possible disruption it would cause, into account).

This summer however, there doesn’t look like being any disruption to flights because of the weather. This last week has seen a lot of rain but the good news is that this seems to be in the past now, with a sunny and hot week ahead. Temperatures are expected to soar to over 22°C with lows of only 18°C towards the end of the week. There will be a few cloudy moments but these will be short lived as the sun breaks through.

Stansted Airport Weather

This year has been a very strange one in terms of the weather in Britain. At the start of this month it was, believe it or not, the coldest May on record and was predicted to continue in that fashion. But this last week has seen a remarkable change as temperatures have soared to heady heights not seen in over a year. So what can we expect from the weather over the coming weekend?

On Saturday the day will start dull and misty in places with a little drizzle. It will brighten up later in the morning with all parts then having a very warm day with some good sunny spells. Maximum temperature 25 °C. In the evening it will continue to be warm with sunny spells before dusk. This will lead to a dry night, although it is likely to turn misty in some rural spots. Minimum temperature 13 °C. On Sunday, the early morning mist will soon clear, with the rest of the day then being dry and hot with some good sunny spells. Maximum temperature 27 °C. It is very clear that the weekend will continue with the same temperatures and the same level of heat. Because it is going to be very hot and very sunny throughout the 2 days it is highly recommended that you slip, slap, slop; slip on a t-shirt, slap on a cap and slop on the sun cream. This will prevent the risk of getting burnt and mean that you can enjoy the sunshine!

London Stansted Airport

London Stansted Airport is the third busiest airport in the United Kingdom, behind Heathrow and Gatwick, and served almost 20 million passengers in 2009. Passenger numbers peaked at 24million in 2007, but ever since then they have been reducing - Stansted is now an excellent alternative to Heathrow airport as there are generally less queues. Currently it only has one main terminal that serves all the passengers wishing to travel there, but it does have three miniature satellite terminals to further sub-divide the passengers and provider quicker boarding; a fourth one is currently under construction and due to be finished shortly. A very large number of airline operators provide flights to and from this airport, with Ryanair, Thompson Airways and EasyJet providing the largest number of destinations all at very low prices.

With it being so busy, the airport has invested heavily to provide excellent transport links with other parts of the country. A railway, boarded from underneath the main terminal building at Stansted Airports offers services every hour to various locations around the country, including Cambridge, Leicester and the Midlands. There is also a service running to London every 15 minutes. It is very easy to rent a car from these stations, or indeed to catch another train to reach your ultimate destination. There are also a wide variety of buses that run frequently to various points in London. The buses are somewhat cheaper than the rail option but the extra speed gained with taking the train is definitely lost.

Stansted Airport Hotels

Stansted airport isn’t within the city of London, which can be incredibly inconvenient if you are planning to fly out early from there. If you want to catch an early flight then the best option is always to drive down the day before and stay overnight in a hotel. The reasoning behind this is incredibly straightforward - they advise you to get to the airport 2 hours before the flight which means that you are either going to have to drive through the night to get there in time or stay the night and get there in a few minutes from the hotel (obviously the more amenable option as it reduces the chance of you being overly tired on your flight).

The issue with Stansted being so far out of the city centre is that it drastically reduces the amount of hotels that you will be able to use in order to make your journey much easier. Ideally, you want to be no more than 20 minutes away from the airport or it defeats the object of staying overnight! Fortunately, there is an array of hotels close to Stansted airport. All of them are able to be used for a short stay and they are more than adequate for your needs. They offer a breakfast in the evening and a restaurant where you can eat your evening meal the night before. The best part is that they are close enough to the airport to allow you to fall out of bed and walk to the airport in time for your flight with a minimum amount of hassle.

Stansted Airport Parking

It used to be that the only way that you considered getting to the airport was by train. The fees for parking in a long stay car park at the airport were renowned for being very high and it would turn out a lot cheaper to buy a train ticket there and back. Because of this, the car parks were rarely used and became a drain on the airport’s funds. However, increasingly, cars are now being used to get to the airport. The reasons for this are relatively straightforward - Stansted isn’t easily accessible for someone coming from outside London (as the majority of people are) and the reliability of British trains is such that there is an inherent lack of trust and a fear that there will be a delay or cancellation that will jeopardise your arrival at the airport; i.e. you will end up missing your flight.

The car park system at Stansted is a modern design that results in the maximum accessibility and reliability for someone wishing to park there. Surveyed by a system of CCTV cameras, there is no fear that your car will come to any damage during your holiday. On top of this, the fear that you won’t be able to find a parking space is much allayed; you can book online beforehand to reserve a space and, in any case, the short stay car park is large enough to mean that there won’t be any spill over of short stay parkers into the long stay car park.

Stansted Airport Departures

Unfortunately, Stansted airport isn’t the most accessible of the London airports. Whilst it is one of the most popular airports it isn’t situated within the capital city and, as such, if you leave anything at home it isn’t very easy to go home and retrieve it; especially when you are under the time pressure of catching a plane. Human nature results in many items being left at home; in fact, surveys have shown that the majority of people going on holiday forget at least one item that is essential; items that we just can’t do without. If we do not have a chance to buy these then it can be very difficult to manage on holiday.

Stansted airport departures is able to cater for those in need. There are a multitude of shops that stock all the items that you could ever need. If you’ve forgotten shower supplies or towels then these can be purchased without hassle and for competitive prices meaning that you aren’t too out of pocket for your mistake. There are also less essential items that can be purchased. A long plane journey would be nigh on unbearable without some form of distraction and, in this age of technology, MP3 players and video games are the entertainment of choice for many people. Batteries are therefore essential to keep them going. If you prefer to read then not only can you purchase magazines but books as well, of all varieties; from best sellers to guide books. Everything you could ever forget can easily be replaced here!
